How do I tell a company that I have received another offer?
May 12th, 2009 | by Rick |~ Jamie ~ asked:
I am interviewing with two seperate companies, Company A and Company B. I received an offer from Company B; however, my true interest lies with Company A. I originally interviewed with A back in July for a seperate position. It was between me and one other person; however, ultimately they were concerned that I may be overqualified for the position. However, the recruiter thought highly of me and passed on my info to the recruiter for this position. When Company B called today, they said the offer was contingent on my background check. At least this will buy me a few extra days, while they are wrapping up the paperwork. Should I mention to Company A that I have received an offer, but express my desire for working with Company A? The recruiter did ask me prior to the interview if I was actively interviewing and who with and for what positions. If I do mention, how should the conversation go? What should I say and how should I say it????
In addition, the recruiter for Company A asked if I could start as soon as Monday. I said yes. However, the Manager of the Department said she would have a decision next week. This may give me a reason to call her other than the other offer, for clarification. ANY IDEAS???? I really, really, really want the job at Company A!
I haven’t received an ofer from Company A at all yet. I also don’t want them to feel I am manipulating them into a decision. I’ll have to be tactful but am not sure how the conversation should go? Any tips?

you need to be honest and up front with company A..just explain that you have recently interviewed with another company and this is what they are offering..see if company A will counter offer them…if not…it will truely be on which company and offers you prefer over the other…. never easy though. Just make sure you dont take the “better” offer without weighing if you will be happy in that job in the long run or happier in the other job for the long run..even though the offer wasnt as grand
good luck

Tell company A that you received another offer but would rather work for them. They would rather you tell them the truth.
Perhaps they will make you an offer or cut you loose completely

Be honest with Company A. Call them and explain that you have an offer from another company that is performing background checks, but you will have to give them an answer “soon”. Let them know that while you don’t want to rush them into making decision, they are your first choice among prospective employers. They will not be turned off by your being eager and straightforward with them; and will like the fact that they are your #1 pick. I would caution though, that you should be humble, don’t act as though you are trying to pressure them. NEVER say “lets cut to the chase” or anything smarmy like that.
The fact that you are concerned enough to post the question here though means you are sincere so should be fine. Sincere is something you are, not something you can “be”.
