How can I track down Insurance Companies that employ people in different states?
December 20th, 2008 | by Rick |Robert F asked:
I’m hearing more and more about positions with Insurance companies, where the base company is several states away but they hire someone to do local audits for their company, for example, someone living in South Carolina doing work for the company based out of Ohio. My question is, does anyone know where to find these positions? I’ve tried the basic jobsearch websites but they don’t typically seem to have positions like that listed.

What you are talking about sounds like an independent adjuster. Most large companies sub-contract out claims to an independent adjuster in the event that a claim that needs to be inspected, etc is out of the range of where their permanent adjuster work or if the claim volume is too high for one of their adjuster to get to.
Normally, there are independent adjuster firms that are rather mobile and can work wherever they are needed. You are probably more likely to find a local claims branch office with a large insurance company than an independent claims position.
Unfortunately, the insurance industry is in a tight market right now so many companies are actually reducing their staff right now so it may be hard to find a job opening in insurance for the next couple years.

You want to be a free lance auditor? Good luck on that.
I think what you’re hearing about is propaganda, from the company that wants to sell you their training.
BUT, to answer your direct question - you go to your state insurance department website, and you look at the companies admitted to do business in your state, then you can look up the contact info at and THEN, it’s straight marketing.
It is NOT easy to get in on this - 99% of outside auditors, are former insurance company employees, and already have their contact network in place - because the ONLY way you get those freelance jobs, is through a contact network.
